Out of the ordinary spaces

Kronprinsensgade 7,
Copenhagen

COPI embarked on a journey only few others would dare when acquiring the over 200-year-old historic masterpiece in the heart of Copenhagen. This impressive building had been vacant for several years, and was ready to undergo a large transformation spearheaded by the COPI team and designed by Johannes Torpe Studios.

Enriching the past

Magical transformations

Kronprinsensgade 7 boasts a rich history and has housed several residents in its lifetime.

Dating back to 1807, it was known as the grand lodge for the Freemasonry Association and hereafter it served as the lodge for the Danish Craftsmen’s Association. A. C. Perch’s Teashop was founded here in 1835, then moved next door, and is soon ready to return to their origin. .

Spanning 1930 square meters, its former residents had plenty of space to reside in and soon this grand masterpiece will be restored to house new residents. The layout and infrastructure will be adapted to meet contemporary functional standards, while keeping the original details in mind.

The end result is a remarkable commercial space, designed to not only inspire but also motivate its future occupants.

With each room needing a functional and modern touch, the charm and history should still be preserved.

Carrying this task has been no easy journey, and our construction director elaborates that the canteen has been one of the most comprehensive projects so far, yet he is immensely proud of the result. The centerpiece of this room is the exquisite carpentry that extends seamlessly throughout the space, all crafted in-house by our talented carpenter. This craftsmanship is a true testament to our commitment to quality and detail.

Beyond the beautiful woodwork, the room features meticulous attention to detail: the nearly windowless space is illuminated by a stunning series of window replicas encircling the canteen complemented by the carefully restored stucco work and pillars adorned with original carvings.

Renovating this majestic building has been no small endeavor and many skilled and experienced people have been engaged in the journey. They have shown a great understanding and respect for the building being listed as a heritage building and with the need for special permissions and restoration demands. Expressing the value in the craftsmen involved cannot go untold.

From ordinary to out of the ordinary

Besides working together with skilled craftsmen during the entire project, several collaborations have been appreciated and made its mark on the final result. An eye-catching feature of the estate is the extensive centerpiece - the main staircase spanning all floors.

Revealing the old wallpaper in this hallway inspired us. Once graced with hand-painted marble looks, its elegance has throughout the years been covered by layers of wallpaper and paint. Now, with the expertise of Malerfirmaet Behrendt we’re peeling back the layers to reveal its original look.

The highlight has been the restoration of the main staircase to its original splendor, where the Craftsmen's Association previously adorned it with marbling on the walls and the natural grains of the woodwork on the ceiling, doors, and panels. In collaboration with Malerfirmaet M. Behrendt & Søn, the old painting techniques and materials were faithfully used to recreate this aesthetic.

M. Behrendt merges cutting-edge design with attention to detail, creating environments that are both functional and visually striking. Their commitment to quality and passion for precision ensure that each project achieves a perfect balance of form and function.

Where history meets a modern masterpiece

The transformation of Kronprinsensgade 7 has resulted in a breathtaking cornucopia of details, where each detail has been taken care of by specialists within their field. But the venture has not been easy. One of the greatest challenges was transforming the property into an office domicile. Previously used by several former residents, a lodge, a church hall, and even a theatre stage, it required extensive reorganisation of internal spaces to meet modern office needs.

Removing layers of recent floor coverings to reveal the original plank floors and herringbone parquet was a particularly satisfying part of the project.

It was a task that demanded careful renovation and restoration to preserve the authentic character of the premises. Significant efforts were also made to remove black paint left from the property's former use as a theater stage. Every element, from floors and ceilings to wall panels, doors, stucco moldings, and rosettes, demanded careful handling to revive their original details.

The vision for the future of this estate has been thoughtfully crafted, with Johannes Torpe spearheading the design process of this remarkable transformation.

Through our collaboration with Johannes Torpe, the transformation of Kronprinsensgade 7 has produced spaces that challenges the ordinary, adding value not only to the building but also to the people who will work there. It stands as a testament to how history and modernity can seamlessly co-exist, creating an extraordinary environment where past splendor meets contemporary excellence.

The inspiration behind our design for K7 was the juxtaposition between preserving the historic building's elements and introducing modern contrasts that honor the past while moving towards the future.

The old mezzanine floor and the dark, gloomy backyard warehouse have been transformed into inviting, modern spaces perfect for meetings and dining in the canteen area.

Kronprinsensgade 7 is not merely the restoration of a historic building; it is a revival of its past glory, thoughtfully adapted to meet today's demands and needs.
